Games That Respect One-Handed Play

Big phones have made one-handed play awkward, but plenty of games are designed for it if you look. The trick is games where the important actions cluster near the bottom of the screen, within thumb reach.

Fishing sims, card games, and cozy builders tend to nail this. Racing and action games usually don't, since they want both thumbs on opposite corners. That's fine, just know what you're getting into before a long train ride.

When a game lets you customize control positions, use it. Dragging buttons to where your thumb naturally rests turns an awkward layout into a comfortable one.

My rule of thumb, literally, is that if I can't play it comfortably standing on a bus, it's a two-handed couch game for me, and I plan around that.
